Nigel Winterburn

The reliable left back who formed part of Arsenal's legendary 1990s defence.

Nigel Winterburn (born 11 December 1963) is an English former professional footballer who made 687 appearances in the Football League and Premier League. He was capped twice by England, in 1989 and 1993. Winterburn played primarily as a left back from 1981 to 2003. He is best known for his role alongside Tony Adams, Steve Bould, Martin Keown and Lee Dixon, forming the defensive line for Arsenal in the Premier League and European football during the 1990s. He also played for Wimbledon and West Ham United, and was contracted to Birmingham City and Oxford United.

Winterburn began his career as an apprentice at Birmingham City in May 1980, turning professional in 1981. He failed to make the Birmingham first team and was signed by Dave Bassett to join Wimbledon on a free transfer in August 1983. He contributed to Wimbledon's promotions from Division Three to Division Two in 1983–84 and from Division Two to Division One two years later. He was voted Wimbledon's Player of the Year in each of his four seasons with the club.

In May 1987 he was transferred for £350,000 to Arsenal. Winterburn made his Arsenal league debut as a substitute against Southampton on 21 November 1987. He began at right-back but later settled into left back after Kenny Sansom left in December 1988. He was part of Arsenal's 1988–89 First Division title win, scoring a vital goal against Wimbledon in the penultimate game.

He also played in the 1988 League Cup final, where he missed a penalty against Luton Town. Winterburn won the league again in 1990–91, and completed a domestic cup double in 1993. He won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1994 and the double of Premiership and FA Cup in 1998. He joined West Ham United in June 2000 for £250,000, scoring one goal for them, and retired in 2003.
