Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie (born 6 August 1983) is a Dutch football coach and former player, most recently head coach of Eredivisie side Feyenoord. Considered among the finest strikers of his era, he was celebrated for his technical skill, close control, and tactical awareness.

Van Persie began his senior career as a winger, debuting for Feyenoord in the 2001–02 season and winning the UEFA Cup that year, also earning the Dutch Football Talent of the Year award. After five years at Feyenoord, a falling-out with manager Bert van Marwijk led to his 2004 move to Arsenal, where he was brought in as a long-term successor to compatriot Dennis Bergkamp. In his first season, he helped Arsenal win the FA Cup and reach the 2005–06 Champions League final. Following the departures of Bergkamp and Thierry Henry, Van Persie was shifted to a central striker role, scoring 111 goals in his next 199 appearances. He served as club captain in 2011–12, winning the PFA Players' Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, and the Premier League Golden Boot.

Disillusioned with Arsenal’s direction, he joined rivals Manchester United in July 2012. He was key to United’s Premier League title win that season, earning a second consecutive Golden Boot. Two injury-hit seasons followed, and after falling out of favour, he moved to Fenerbahçe in July 2015. He played regularly in his first season in Turkey but saw limited time later due to injuries, and both parties agreed to a buyout in January 2018. He then returned to Feyenoord on a free transfer, helping his boyhood club win the Dutch Cup by season’s end.

Internationally, Van Persie debuted for the Netherlands senior side in a 2005 friendly against Romania and scored his first goal a month later in a 4–0 win over Finland. He earned over 100 caps and scored 50 goals, holding the national team’s all-time scoring record until 2025. He captained the Netherlands from 2013 to 2015 and played in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups, as well as Euro 2008 and 2012, reaching the 2010 final and winning bronze in 2014.

After retiring, Van Persie moved into coaching. His first role was at Heerenveen, and he was appointed head coach of Feyenoord in February 2025. He was dismissed in June 2026.

Born in Rotterdam, Van Persie joined local side Excelsior’s youth setup at age five but left for Feyenoord at 16 after clashing with Excelsior’s coaches over his “petulant” attitude. An injury crisis at Feyenoord led to his rapid promotion, and he made his first-team debut at 17, starting 15 matches in 2001–02. He started in the UEFA Cup final, a 3–2 win over Borussia Dortmund, and received the KNVB Best Young Talent award.

The next season, he signed a three-and-a-half-year professional contract and scored five goals in a 6–1 KNVB Cup win over AGOVV Apeldoorn on 6 February 2003. But clashes with manager Bert van Marwijk saw him demoted to the reserves. During a reserve match against Ajax, he was among several Feyenoord players attacked by pitch-invading hooligans. The rift continued when Van Marwijk sent him home on the eve of the 2002 UEFA Super Cup final against Real Madrid, unhappy with Van Persie’s body language during a warm-up request. He finished his first full season with eight goals in 28 appearances and was a runner-up in the KNVB Cup.

Feyenoord failed to extend his contract that summer, and his worsening relationship with Van Marwijk left him mostly on the bench in 2003–04. He again played 28 matches but scored two fewer goals. The club tried to sell him but found few buyers due to his disciplinary record. In the January transfer window, Feyenoord opened talks with Arsenal, who wanted a long-term replacement for Dennis Bergkamp, but no deal was reached.

On 17 May 2004, Van Persie signed a four-year contract with Arsenal for £2.75 million, about half of Feyenoord’s original £5 million asking price. Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger planned to convert him from left winger to centre-forward, as he had with Thierry Henry, and said Van Persie could play on the left, as a creative player behind the strikers, or as a target man. With Spanish forward José Antonio Reyes also joining in January, competition for places was stiff.

Van Persie made his debut as a substitute in the 3–1 FA Community Shield win over Manchester United on 8 August 2004. He spent much of the early season on the bench, then scored his first competitive goal in a 2–1 League Cup win over Manchester City on 27 October. On 26 February, he was sent off for the first time in an Arsenal shirt during a 1–1 draw at Southampton after a lunge at left-back Graeme Le Saux, prompting Wenger to shout at him from the touchline.
