Background
As the second seed the Cardinals opened the playoffs on January 16, 2016, against the fifth-seeded Green Bay Packers and won 26-20 in overtime, giving quarterback Carson Palmer his first career playoff victory. A week later, on January 24, they lost the NFC Championship Game 49-15 to the top-seeded, 15-1 Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, committing seven turnovers, tied for the most in a conference championship game since the Los Angeles Rams' 28-0 loss to Dallas in the 1978 season. The game was a rematch of the 2008 divisional round, in which the 9-7 Cardinals had upset the 12-4 Panthers in Carolina.
