1974 St. Louis Cardinals season

A 7-0 start, the NFC East title and the franchise's first playoff trip since 1948, ended at Minnesota.

The 1974 season was the St. Louis Cardinals' 55th in the National Football League and their 15th in St. Louis. Under head coach Don Coryell the team won its first seven games, stayed at least tied for first place all season and finished 10-4 to win the NFC East, scoring 285 points and allowing 218. It was the franchise's first postseason appearance since 1948, when it was still based in Chicago, and its first winning season since the 8-5-1 team of 1970.

Background

St. Louis and Washington both finished 10-4, but the Cardinals took the division because they had beaten the Redskins twice. The playoff run ended in the divisional round at Minnesota, where the Cardinals lost 30-14 to the Vikings; the two teams had also met at Busch Memorial Stadium on November 11, a 28-24 Vikings win. The Cardinals would not open a season 7-0 again until 2021, by which time they were playing in Arizona. Five players went to the Pro Bowl: tackle Dan Dierdorf, quarterback Jim Hart, running back Terry Metcalf, receiver Mel Gray and cornerback Roger Wehrli.
