Background
Carolina controlled the game from the start despite losing linebacker Thomas Davis and safety Roman Harper to injuries in the first half. Cam Newton's opening drive produced a 45-yard Graham Gano field goal; Ted Ginn Jr. returned a punt 32 yards to the Arizona 49 and then scored on a 22-yard end around to make it 10-0; and with 49 seconds left in the first quarter Corey Brown caught a pass near the 40, slipped a tackle and finished an 86-yard touchdown, the longest play in Panthers postseason history, for a 17-0 lead. Arizona had won the coin toss but never found its footing on offense. The matchup was a rematch of the 2008 divisional round, when the 9-7, fourth-seeded Cardinals had upset the 12-4 Panthers in the same stadium. Arizona's seven giveaways tied the most in a conference championship game since the 1978 season. The loss left the Cardinals at 14-4 for the year.
