Gamba is a town mouse who calls himself Ganbari-ya no Gamba. He is energetic, curious, and has a strong sense of justice. He takes a trip to show the sea to his close friend Bōbo, and meets Chūta at the harbor. Gamba and his friends journey to defeat Noroi, who rules Noroi Island.
In Lionsgate's English film dub, he is renamed Gavin. Bobo is Gamba's best friend, a gluttonous, green-furred, easygoing town mouse whose name comes from his absentmindedness. His sensitive nose helps him find food. In the 2015 film, Bobo is made into a secondary character.
Mampuku appears only in the 2015 film, taking on Bobo's original role from the 1970s anime; he is renamed Matthew in Lionsgate's English dub. Yoisho is the kind-hearted captain of sailor mice, with a girlfriend named Yuri. He is highly dependable and calmer than Gamba, and lost his right eye to Noroi. In the English dub, he is renamed Rusty.
Gakusha is one of Yoisho's childhood friends; he is knowledgeable, clever, wears big glasses, and has a short tail. He is renamed Grayson in the English dub. Shijin is the wandering doctor mouse who reads poetry aloud when drunk and has sensitive ears. Ikasama is a gambler skilled at fraud, also called a swift runner; he is renamed Ace in the English dub.
Chūta is an insular mouse who comes to town for help, the younger brother of Shioji; he is renamed Chester in the English dub. Noroi is the leader weasel with snow-white fur and red eyes, a cruel killer who can apply hypnotism when his red eyes shine; he is renamed Winston in the English dub. Shioji is the granddaughter of elder mouse Shuro from Yumemishima and older sister of Chūta; she is renamed Shelly in the English dub. Toragoro is a traveler mouse on his way home from a ten-year trip who uses Gamba to avoid danger; he is modeled on Torajirō of Otoko wa Tsurai yo.
