Production
The animated series Skull Island was first announced in January 2021 as a collaboration between Netflix and Legendary Entertainment. Brian Duffield was brought on as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, working alongside executive producer Jacob Robinson. Production was handled by Powerhouse Animation Studios and Legendary Television, with Studio Mir providing the animation. Robinson described the initial idea as “Goonies on Skull Island,” which he pitched to Duffield.
Together, they decided to center the story on the human characters. Robinson explained that animation was chosen because its “intimacy” and lower budget compared to live-action allowed for “incredible visuals and epic battles.” He also praised Duffield’s scripts, saying he had never given fewer notes on a project. Series director Willis Bulliner noted that the team aimed to “create as many new characters as we could” and “borrow as much references as we can from what’s available,” since Legendary did not have the rights to use monsters owned by Toho.
Netflix released the first teaser image in June 2022. In May 2023, the voice cast was announced, including Nicolas Cantu, Mae Whitman, Darren Barnet, Benjamin Bratt, and Betty Gilpin, alongside a teaser trailer that confirmed the release date. In October 2023, Duffield stated that scripts for a second season were complete, but the series awaited a green light from Netflix. The story continued in March 2025 with the announcement of the comic book miniseries Return to Skull Island, released in July 2025. A sequel miniseries, Escape from Skull Island, was announced in October 2025 and released in January 2026.
Reception
Critics were split on Skull Island. On Rotten Tomatoes, 82% of 17 reviews were positive, giving it an average score of 7.00 out of 10. The site's consensus called it a lively but somewhat derivative take on King Kong's recent movie, successfully giving a more mature feel to old-school Saturday morning cartoons. Metacritic calculated a weighted score of 51 out of 100 from 4 critics, which it classified as mixed or average. IGN's Samantha Nelson rated it 5 out of 10, arguing the series tries to blend Kong: Skull Island with Jonny Quest but is let down by flat performances, weak writing, and recycled fight scenes from the film. In contrast, Joey Rambles of Cultured Vultures gave it a 7.5 out of 10, praising its fun characters, gripping action, and impressive visuals, calling it an energetic thrill ride that lives up to its title and fits well within the MonsterVerse.
