Momo is a princess of Fenarinarsa, 'the land of dreams in the sky,' a dwelling place for fairy tale characters. Fenarinarsa is in danger of leaving Earth's orbit because people have lost their dreams and hopes. The king and queen send Momo to Earth to help people regain them. She becomes the daughter of a young childless couple, accompanied by three followers: a dog (Sindbook), a monkey (Mocha), and a bird (Pipil). On Earth, Momo appears as an 8 to 10-year-old girl and transforms into an adult version of herself with an occupation suited to each situation. Each time she brings happiness, the Fenarinarsa crown shines; after four shines a jewel appears, and once 12 jewels appear, Fenarinarsa will return to Earth. Later, Momo loses her powers and is killed by a collision with a truck full of toys, then reincarnated as the real daughter of the couple.

The original series ran on TV Tokyo and inspired three OVAs between 1985 and 1987. A second television series, subtitled Hold on to Your Dreams, aired on NTV from 1991 to 1992 and also spawned home video follow-ups. A third Momo series began in 2004 as a manga titled Miracle Dream Minky Momo in Shogakukan's Shōgaku Ninensei magazine. In 2006, writer Takeshi Shudo expressed interest in a third anime series; in 2009, Ashi Productions announced a new production, but it has not surfaced, likely due to Shudo's death in 2010. A new OVA, Magical Princess Minky Momo: A Duo of Sincerity Toward a Dream of Longing, will be released in November 2026.

The original series, while aimed at young girls to sell toys, attracted a considerable number of older male fans. Alongside Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel, it is credited as one of the originators of the lolicon otaku subculture. This unintended audience allegedly disgusted Ashi Productions founder Sato Toshihiko, but it helped the show gain a strong 10% viewer share, extending its run from 50 to 63 episodes. Episode 46 became infamous for depicting Momo's death after being hit by a truck carrying toys. Series writer Takeshi Shudo explained that toy sponsor Popy pulled funding due to poor merchandise sales despite strong ratings; Ashi Productions revolted and killed the character off temporarily. This sequence was seen as a trailblazer allowing later magical-girl productions to deal with darker themes. The episode and the last later inspired a Japanese urban legend linking the series to natural disasters. In 1993, Hiroshi Takada won JASRAC's International Award for his work on the first TV series. The original series ranked 70th in TV Asahi's 2005 poll of the most popular anime. Internationally, Harmony Gold repackaged the original series into The Magical World of Gigi, broadcast in multiple countries, and later released an English dub of the 1985 OVA as Gigi and the Fountain of Youth.
