History

After leaving Megadeth in 1987, guitarist Chris Poland recorded a solo album, Return to Metalopolis, in 1990. Three years later, he resurfaced with Damn the Machine, which included his brother Mark Poland on drums, David Judson Clemmons on vocals and guitar, and David Randi on bass. The group's sound was heavier but more progressive than Poland's previous work, comparable to Queensrÿche or Fates Warning with a jazzier twist and politically charged lyrics. The band signed with A&M Records in 1993, and their self-titled debut album was released the same year, recorded and produced by Brian Malouf. They toured with Dream Theater in Europe and with Voivod, Flotsam and Jetsam, and Excel in North America, and shot a music video for "The Mission." A promotional CD-5 titled Silence featured covers of "I'd Love to Change the World" by Ten Years After and King Crimson's "Cat Food." Prior to the album, an 18-song live-in-studio demo included six songs that did not make the album, such as "Fear of Fear" and "Welcome the Red." Another six songs were demoed in 1995 before Clemmons left the band.

Aftermath

Damn the Machine failed to catch on with alternative audiences, and A&M Records gradually pulled its backing. After their contract was terminated, the band dissolved. Dave Clemmons left, and the remaining members recruited a new vocalist to become Mumbo's Brain, a project featured on Chris Poland's 2000 solo album Rare Trax. Clemmons later started Jud and then The Fullbliss, while Chris Poland launched the jazz-fusion trio OHM. Mark Poland pursued his own musical venture, and Dave Randi took a job at Playboy Plus Entertainment.
