History

After the Burial came together in 2004 when high school friends Nick Wellner, Trent Hafdahl, Justin Lowe, and Greg Erickson decided to start a band. While they looked for a permanent bassist, Dave Coleman filled in temporarily. A post on a Twin Cities hardcore message board led to Lee Foral joining the lineup. Their debut album, Forging a Future Self, was cut in late 2005 and hit shelves on March 1, 2006, through Corrosive Records, though no formal contract was ever signed. When the group later inked a deal with Sumerian Records, Erickson and Wellner left, and Grant Luoma came in as vocalist. Eric Robles replaced Erickson on drums but was gone before the second album was made. For 2008’s Rareform, rhythm guitarist Lowe handled all drum programming, while Hafdahl wrote the lyrics because Luoma wasn’t contributing. After Rareform came out, Luoma was swapped for Anthony Notarmaso, and Dan Carle took over on drums. The band hit the road in late 2008 supporting Suicide Silence on The Cleansing The Nation Tour, then co-headlined a U.S. tour with Veil of Maya in early 2009. In September 2009, they re-released Rareform with Notarmaso’s vocals, adding bonus content like live footage from a sold-out show. A 10-year anniversary tour for Rareform happened in 2018, with The Acacia Strain joining them. Their third album, In Dreams, was recorded and put out in 2010 through Sumerian. Late that year, they backed Winds of Plague on The December Decimation Tour, and in 2011 they headlined the Crush Em’ All Tour 2. On March 14, 2011, an extended mix of “Pi (The Mercury God of Infinity)” appeared on YouTube. On April 2, 2013, Sumerian posted a re-mastered version of “A Steady Decline” to mark seven years since Forging a Future Self.
