History
In 1999, Paul Heyman signed a three-year contract with TNN hoping to expand national awareness of his company; prior to this, ECW shows were only televised via syndication. TNN added ECW to its "Friday Night Thrill Zone" lineup to build on the increase in teenage and young male viewership that RollerJam had brought. Into 2000, the network claimed a vast improvement in that demographic on Friday nights due to ECW. Early signs of a rocky relationship came when TNN president David Hall implied the program would be "toned down" from ECW's usual violent and explicit content.
Heyman later alleged that TNN's requests to tone down content were excessive. Another source of contention was the lack of original programming: Heyman aired a compilation of promos and old matches as an introduction, which commentator Joey Styles said "the network crapped on," a recollection supported by wrestler Tommy Dreamer. TNN reportedly placed great importance on retaining top star Taz; ECW initially announced a lucrative deal for him, but it fell through and Taz signed with the WWF months after the show's premiere.
Former producer Ron Buffone stated that TNN provided a very small budget while asking for high-quality production on par with WCW Monday Nitro and WWF Raw. Heyman and former wrestlers also alleged a lack of promotion by the network and its parent company Viacom. The relationship was reflected in The Network stable, which became part of ECW's storylines during the program's run.
