Story and episodes
The series follows a man or a woman seeking a perfect mate from a group of contestants, or has contestants living together in a mansion competing for a cash prize, depending on the season. Season one features fireman Mark Orlando, played by Ken Marino, as the bachelor. Season two, premiering in February 2013, stars June Diane Raphael as Julie, a contestant from season one who becomes the bachelorette. Season three, also premiering in 2013, has former contestants from the first two seasons competing for a $900 prize rather than love, similar to the Bachelor spin-off Bachelor Pad.
The show's internal season chronology does not match the listed seasons due to two fictitious seasons. Internally, season one references a Joe Rutherford season starring Ben Stiller, and seasons two and three reference an Annie season with Abigail Spencer; neither was produced but events from them are frequently mentioned. Season three also announced a nonexistent season featuring superfan Hathwell Crisping. The nonexistent seasons are: Burning Love with Joe Rutherford, Burning Love: Hot For Teacher with Annie, and Burning Love: A Fanty Tale with Hathwell Granger Crisping.
The real seasons are: Burning Love with Mark Orlando (Season One), Burning Love with Julie Gristlewhite (Season Two), and Burning Love: Burning Down The House (Season Three). Various elimination methods are used, including hose ceremonies, group dates, one-on-one dates, two-on-one dates, box ceremonies, and disqualifications for rule violations, drunkenness, fighting, urinating in the wine cellar, or calling a puppet date dumb. One contestant left on his own for not being interested in Julie.
International adaptation
A French version titled La Flamme premiered on Canal+ on October 12, 2020, created by Jérémie Galan, Florent Bernard, and Jonathan Cohen, who also starred as the bachelor Marc in the first season. Ben Stiller is an executive producer of this adaptation. The first season cast includes Leïla Bekhti, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and others. It was renewed for a second season on October 27, 2020, titled Le Flambeau : Les Aventuriers de Chupacabra, a spoof of the French version of Survivor, premiering on May 23, 2022.
