Format
Each episode follows two brides-to-be, splitting screen time between them. The story opens with each couple explaining their meeting and romance, then the bride shares her wedding vision. The rest of the episode highlights her interactions with family, in-laws, wedding party, and vendors, which are mostly negative and portray her as controlling, bullying, and emotional. It ends with the wedding, reception, and a final joint interview. Stories run across two episodes: the start of one bride’s tale pairs with the end of another’s, and the pattern continues in sequence.
Production
Filming for the first season began in 2003 under the title Manhattan Brides, intended to follow young, white, wealthy New York residents preparing for their weddings. After filming, footage was edited to emphasize bad behavior and the show was renamed Bridezillas. One bride, Julia Swinton-Williamson, sued producers for misleading her about the project's nature. The first season was co-produced by MetroTV and September Films, airing first on MetroTV; Fox aired a one-hour special from Season 1 in January 2004.
The show began airing on WE tv in summer 2004 and has since been the highest-rated original program on that network. After the first season, the show diversified to include older couples, more ethnicities, and varied financial statuses, filming across different states. The third season introduced the first male bride, Jon Taylor Carter, planning his wedding in Massachusetts. In March 2013, WE tv renewed the series for a 22-episode tenth and final season plus the spinoff Marriage Boot Camp.
Episodes from seasons five through seven entered broadcast syndication on September 16, 2013. The show returned for an eleventh season on March 2, 2018, with a mid-season premiere on June 1, 2018. A special edition spinoff, Bridezillas: Scared Fit, hosted by Donna Sexton, aired on July 7, 2018. The twelfth season premiered on March 15, 2019.
The thirteenth and final season was announced on August 27, 2020, premiering September 24, 2020. AMC Networks announced a fourteenth season premiering November 18, 2025 on All Reality, narrated by Tamar Braxton.
