Synopsis
Drew Oslett Sr. and Jr., shadowy operatives, create assassins through genetic engineering and cloning. After electrocuting a candidate for his DNA, the tissue samples are contaminated and replaced by those of mystery novelist Marty Stillwater. Seven years later, his clone Alfie is a perfect soldier and remorseless killer, but has developed a telepathic bond and remote viewing with Marty. Jealous of Marty's life, Alfie intends to replace him, prompting the Osletts to order a hit on the Stillwaters.
Production
Dean Koontz sold the film rights to Savoy Pictures after the book's publication. The adaptation was initially planned as a 1996 theatrical feature starring Bruce Willis and directed by Uli Edel, but that version did not materialize. The rights were then sold to another production company, which developed the project as a miniseries on a smaller budget. Dick Lowry directed from a teleplay by Stephen Tolkin. The cast included Stephen Baldwin, Julie Warner, Thomas Haden Church, and James Coburn as Drew Oslett Sr., a character not in the book.
