Stefan Kovacs
The Romanian coach who won consecutive European Cups with Ajax while letting players be themselves.
Ștefan Kovács succeeded Rinus Michels as the head of Ajax in 1971, expanding on the 'total football' philosophy with a unique approach. At the start, stars like Johan Cruyff were sceptical; Cruyff once shot a ball at Kovács while he spoke to an assistant, but Kovács made an impeccable stop and returned it, advising: 'Use the inside more when shooting.' Unlike his predecessor, Kovács fostered a relaxed environment where players could be themselves. In just two seasons, he secured the league title and KNVB Cup in 1972, defeating Inter Milan 2–0 with a brace from Cruyff. He followed this by winning another championship and the European Cup in 1973 against Juventus, scoring the only goal via Johnny Rep.

Background
Kovács's tenure (1971–1973) was defined by a shift from rigid discipline to creative freedom. Cruyff later noted, 'Ștefan Kovács was a very pleasant coach, but much less strict than Michels when it came to discipline.' This trust yielded immediate results: the 1971–72 season saw Ajax overcome Dynamo Dresden, Marseille, Arsenal, and Benfica before crushing Inter Milan 2–0 in the final. The following year brought more glory with an Intercontinental Cup victory over Independiente (4–1 aggregate) and a European Super Cup win against Rangers (6–3 aggregate). The campaign concluded with another league title and a second consecutive European Cup, achieved by progressing past CSKA Sofia, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid to defeat Juventus 1–0. His legacy was sealed when the players gifted him a Ford Taunus at his final game because he always cycled to training.
