Airbus A350

The Airbus A350 is a long-range, wide-body twin-engine airliner built by Airbus. It was the company’s first aircraft to use carbon-fibre-reinforced polymers for most of its structure. It competes with Boeing’s 777, 777X, and 787 Dreamliner.

Airbus initially dismissed the Boeing 787 as a serious threat to its A330, but airlines pushed for a competitor. In 2004, Airbus proposed a modified A330 with composite wings, advanced winglets, and new engines. This early design, called the A350, was approved for offer in December 2004, with a planned 2010 service entry. It would have used an aluminium-lithium fuselage and shared the A330’s cross-section. Two versions were planned: the A350-800 (253 passengers, 8,800 nmi range) and the A350-900 (300 passengers, 7,500 nmi range), targeting the 787-9 and 777-200ER.

Major customers, including ILFC and GECAS, criticised the design as a “Band-aid reaction” to the 787. Singapore Airlines’ CEO also urged a clean-sheet approach. In 2006, Airbus switched to a completely new design, the A350 XWB (extra wide body). It has a 3-3-3 nine-across economy cross-section (with 3-4-3 ten-across on some aircraft), a step up from the A330’s 2-4-2 eight-across layout. It is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB high-bypass turbofan engines. The prototype first flew on 14 June 2013 from Toulouse. EASA certification came in September 2014, followed by FAA certification two months later.

There are two main variants. The A350-900 typically carries 300 to 350 passengers over 15,750 km (8,500 nmi), with a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 283 tonnes. The longer A350-1000 carries 350 to 410 passengers over 16,700 km (9,000 nmi), with a 322-tonne MTOW. The A350-900 entered service with Qatar Airways on 15 January 2015; the A350-1000 followed with the same airline on 24 February 2018.

As of July 2026, Singapore Airlines is the largest operator with 65 aircraft, while Turkish Airlines has the most on order at 110. A total of 1,601 A350s have been ordered, with 731 delivered and 730 in service across 38 operators. The global fleet has completed over 2 million flights on more than 1,365 routes, carrying over 530 million passengers with no fatalities and one hull loss in an airport-safety-related incident. The A350 succeeds the A340 and shares a common type rating with the A330.
