Two friends try to outdrink Satan to escape Hell.

Afterparty (video game)

Afterparty is an adventure video game from Night School Studio. It launched on macOS, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in October 2019, with a Nintendo Switch version following in March 2020. The game takes place in a version of hell designed like a college town, where players control two lifelong friends who must talk their way through situations and try to outdrink Satan in order to return from the afterlife.

The story begins with Milo and Lola, recent college graduates, arriving in hell with no memory of how they died. They are assigned a Personal Demon named Sister Mary Wormhorn and soon meet Sam, a cab-driving psychopomp. Sam explains that while demons torture souls during work hours, both groups party together at night. The only way out is to beat Satan at his own drinking game. After getting an invitation to Lucifer’s party, the pair meet him, and he demands they prove themselves by collecting seals of approval from his siblings, the Monarchs of Hell.

One Monarch, Apollyon, is a judge of the dead. Milo and Lola sneak into a demons-only bar to find her. She sees through their disguise and agrees to give them a seal if they act as lawyers for a soul named Roberto, who is charged with serial murder. Players can either throw the trial as Apollyon wants or let Roberto go to heaven and then challenge her. Either way, Apollyon gives them the seal. Another Monarch, Asmodeus, is a hard-partying figure trying to forget a breakup. Milo and Lola can either reunite him with his ex, Beth, or beat him in a dance-off to get the seal.

With the seals in hand, Milo and Lola return to Satan’s party with a team of allies they’ve made along the way. Apollyon tries to intervene, arguing that Satan’s drinking is harming hell, but Satan angrily teleports the pair away to continue the contest. The game has multiple endings based on how well they perform in the drinking game. If they win, they return to Earth. If they lose or refuse to play, they stay in hell. Later, Milo and Lola relax at a bar, discussing how things are going. Depending on player choices, Satan may be recovering from addiction or have relapsed, but hell seems to be running better. Sam then bursts in with news of another possible escape, and the two immediately agree to try.

Lore & Background

The game's plot centers on lifelong friends and recent college graduates Milo and Lola, who find themselves in Hell with no memory of how they arrived. After meeting a psychopomp cab driver named Sam, they learn that the only way out is to outdrink and out-party Satan himself. To gain entry to Lucifer's party, they must obtain seals of approval from the Monarchs of Hell, including Apollyon, a judge of the Dead, and Asmodeus, a hard-partying demon. The player's choices affect the outcome, with multiple endings depending on performance in a drinking game.

Reader's Guide

Afterparty was developed by Night School Studio following the success of their first game, Oxenfree, and after the closure of Telltale Games disrupted a planned Stranger Things project. The game reportedly benefited from absorbing talent from that canceled project. It received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic and fair approval on OpenCritic, with 63% of critics recommending it. Critics praised the relationship between the protagonists, the witty humor, and the original take on the biblical setting. The game was nominated for 'Game, Original Adventure' and 'Writing in a Comedy' at the NAVGTR Awards.
