Gennaro Ivan Gattuso defined the defensive midfield role for AC Milan during their most successful modern era. Born on 9 January 1978, he arrived at the club in the summer of 1999 for €8 million after a brief spell with Salernitana. While he initially played out wide or as a right-back earlier in his career, his partnership with Andrea Pirlo under Carlo Ancelotti created one of football's most effective duos. Gattuso provided the pace, strength, and ball-winning ability that allowed Pirlo to flourish creatively. Over his tenure, he secured two UEFA Champions League titles (2002–03 and 2006–07), a Serie A crown in 2003–04, and multiple domestic cups. He served as vice-captain under Massimo Ambrosini from 2009 and eventually became captain after Ambrosini left in 2013.
