Rule changes
In summer 2010, the rules for registering non-EU (or non-EFTA or Swiss) nationals transferred from abroad were revised, announced on 2 July 2010. Clubs could sign only one such player per season, and only if a current non-EU squad member had been sold or sold abroad. The late announcement forced some clubs to cancel incoming transfers; for example, Parma had to choose between Colombian Pablo Armero and Brazilian Zé Eduardo, ultimately transferring the latter.
Teams
The league comprised 17 returning teams from 2009–10 Serie A and three promoted from 2009–10 Serie B. Lecce and Cesena earned direct promotion by finishing first and second, respectively, on 30 May 2010. Brescia won the promotion playoff final on 13 June 2010, defeating Torino 2–1 on aggregate.
