Background and music
Two songs, "Son of Mustang Ford" and "Volcano Trash", were written by Adam Franklin after his previous band Shake Appeal disbanded. Swervedriver signed to Creation Records after Mark Gardener of Ride handed their demo tape to Alan McGee. The band planned a series of four-track EPs over a year, beginning with this one. Recording and production took place at Greenhouse Studios in London. Franklin told NME the EP was based on the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas idea of driving across American landscapes while out of one's mind. "Kill the Superheroes" was composed in an alternate tuning. A music video for "Son of Mustang Ford" was released. Music journalist Simon Williams described the band's sound on the EP as dirtier than other Creation acts, mixing contemporary American guitar rock with languid British dream pop.
Critical reception
Andy Kellman of Allmusic wrote that the EP announced Swervedriver's presence on the shoegaze scene with authority, but with a heavier side appealing to fans of Loop and the Stooges. He noted that while the band was as textured and flanged out as any shoegaze act, they came across as likely to listen to Black Sabbath as to My Bloody Valentine, and called the EP merely the launching pad for their career. Simon Price of Melody Maker described the release as a chromium-plated piece of automobile romanticism.
