Background

Rave Down is the second of a string of EPs Swervedriver released in the early 1990s, following Son of Mustang Ford (1990) and preceding Sandblasted (1991). It was recorded and mixed at Jam Studios. The EP's title track was singled out by NME critic Mary Anne Hobbs as "a cyclone of wild, swollen riff machinery that sounds like it's been played with dislocated shoulder joints." She noted that "She's Beside Herself" was the only track where another influence—"an almost distinguished Costello-like vocal quality, oddly"—was discernible through Swervedriver's "shredder-static."

Allmusic's Andy Kellman called the bulldozing, bass-driven onslaught "Dinosaur Jr.-meets-Stooges" and declared the title track "undeniably one of Swervedriver's all-time career highs, churning and chugging with that effortless flair they often possessed." He also praised the B-sides, especially "Afterglow," as "anything but afterthoughts or gap fillers." The EP was made single of the week by a heavy metal magazine, which prompted bassist Adi Vines to describe the band's style as "ethereal metal."
