Lore & Background
Ys Seven follows Adol Christin and Dogi as they arrive in Altago after the Romun Empire ends its restrictions on foreign travel. They intervene when local Dragon Knights threaten sisters Tia and Maya, leading to their arrest. King Kiemarl recognizes Adol's reputation and asks him to investigate earthquakes and disturbances throughout Altago. Adol travels with companions including Dragon Knight Aisha, merchant Mustafa, and members of regional communities, learning that the disturbances are connected to the Five Great Dragons worshipped in the kingdom. Each dragon grants Adol part of its power and directs the group toward a ritual intended to prevent a recurring calamity. The group discovers the destruction threatening Altago is part of a natural cycle of creation and extinction controlled by the dragons. Tia, descended from the ancient people responsible for the ritual, intends to allow the cycle to continue after witnessing Altago's social divisions and exploitation. Her adopted sister Maya is selected as the sacrifice needed to complete the ritual. Adol and his companions reject the destruction and confront Tia and the power governing the cycle, defeating the final manifestation of the calamity and preventing Maya's sacrifice. Tia disappears after helping the group, and Adol and Dogi eventually leave Altago.
Reader's Guide
Ys Seven's significance lies in its fundamental redesign of the Ys series' combat system. It introduced a three-member active party that could be switched during battle, three weapon-based attack types (slashing, striking, piercing), learnable skills, Extra Skills, and the timing-based Flash Guard mechanic. This framework became the basis for the combat systems of Ys: Memories of Celceta, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, and Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. The game was Falcom's first original Ys game developed specifically for the PlayStation Portable, following several Windows releases built around the action framework of Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. It moved away from single-character combat to a party-based system, with companions participating directly throughout a shared campaign. The game also broadened structure outside combat, with larger field areas, optional quests, material gathering, and equipment improvement. Xseed Games released the PSP version in North America in August 2010 and in Europe that November. A Windows version was released in China in 2012, and Xseed later commissioned a separate Windows port released internationally in August 2017 with higher-resolution rendering, 60 frames per second, and a revised English script.
