John Dutton
Widowed patriarch of the Dutton family and owner of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.
John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner, is the widowed fifth-generation patriarch of the Dutton family. He owned and ran the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, described as the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, and also served as Montana Livestock Commissioner. Josh Lucas plays a younger John in scenes set in the 1990s.
Lore & Background
Across the series John is repeatedly challenged by people who want to take control of the ranch's land, among them the California developer Dan Jenkins, Chief Thomas Rainwater of the neighbouring Broken Rock Indian Reservation and the Market Equities corporation. At the start of the fifth season he becomes Governor of Montana, and he later hands ownership of the ranch to his youngest son, Kayce. His children are Lee, Beth, Kayce and the adopted Jamie; his late wife was Evelyn. Rip Wheeler, the ranch foreman, is his right-hand man and enforcer.
