The Crow Nation
The Apsaalooke of southern Montana, whose people appear across 1883 and 1923.
The Crow, whose own name is Apsaalooke, are Native Americans living mainly in southern Montana; the federally recognised Crow Tribe of Montana has the Crow Indian Reservation in the south-central part of the state. A Plains tribe, they speak the Crow language, a Siouan language, and historically lived in the Yellowstone River valley from present-day Wyoming through Montana.
Lore & Background
Crow characters run through the franchise's prequels. In 1883 Spotted Eagle (Graham Greene) is a Crow elder who helps Elsa and points James Dutton to Paradise Valley. In 1923 Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) is a young Apsaalooke woman taken from her family to a government-funded, Catholic-run boarding school; her grandmother Issaxche Rainwater seeks to reunite with her, and Hank Plenty Clouds (Michael Greyeyes), a Crow shepherd from the Broken Rock Reservation, finds her on the run.
