Lore & Background
Michaels began his journey in the National Wrestling Alliance territories before debuting nationally in the American Wrestling Association (AWA) as Sean Michaels. There, he formed The Midnight Rockers with Marty Jannetty, winning the AWA World Tag Team Championship once. After a brief departure from the WWF due to a bar incident, the team returned and won the titles again before signing a permanent contract with the WWF in early 1989 as simply "The Rockers".
Their partnership ended on December 2, 1991 (aired January 11, 1992), when Michaels superkicked Jannetty through a glass window on Brutus Beefcake's "Barber Shop" segment. Adopting the "Heartbreak Kid" persona suggested by Curt Hennig, he became a prominent villain with manager Sensational Sherri, who sang his theme song "Sexy Boy". He won his first Intercontinental Championship and challenged for the WWF Championship at UK Rampage in 1992. A co-founder of D-Generation X, Michaels headlined pay-per-views from 1989 to 2018, main-eventing WrestleMania three times (XII, XIV, and XXVI).
