Lore & Background

From 2014 to 2020, WWE positioned Reigns as a heroic character to be the next 'face of the company,' a move met with intense disapproval by audiences despite his numerous accolades. During this era, he won the Royal Rumble in 2015 and captured the WWE Championship three times. Following a hiatus, he was repackaged as a villainous character between 2020 and 2024, a shift generally acclaimed by critics and fans alike. As a heel, he secured his second Universal Championship and fourth WWE Championship simultaneously as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. Upon losing this dual title, the Universal Championship was retired with Reigns recognized as its final champion. In 2026, he won the Royal Rumble match for a second time and defeated opponents at WrestleMania 42 to claim the World Heavyweight Championship.

Reader's Guide

To understand Roman Reigns' trajectory, one must track his evolution from a babyface to a dominant villain. He began in developmental territories under the name Roman Leakee, debuting on August 19, 2010. After rebranding to NXT and adopting the Roman Reigns persona in October 2012, he quickly ascended with The Shield. His early singles success included winning the Royal Rumble in 2015. However, his push as a 'good guy' faced audience resistance until 2020, when his repackaging as a villain transformed his reception. Key statistics include being WWE's 28th Triple Crown Champion and 17th Grand Slam Champion. He holds the joint-record for most eliminations in a Survivor Series match with four. His accolades also include ranking No. 1 on Pro Wrestling Illustrated's PWI 500 list in both 2016 and 2022, and being named Wrestler of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 2021.
