Varian Wrynn
The warrior-king whose return united a fractured realm and whose sacrifice led an Alliance against the Burning Legion.
Varian Wrynn is the father of Anduin Llane Wrynn and the former King of Stormwind within Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft franchise. His narrative arc spans from his mysterious disappearance, which left young Anduin to rule as a child king under regency, to his dramatic return where he resumed the throne. Varian was characterized by a militaristic worldview that often clashed with his son's preference for diplomacy and reconciliation. He served as an acting father figure to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon during his absence before reuniting with Anduin. His leadership defined the human kingdom of Stormwind until his death in World of Warcraft: Legion, after which he was succeeded by his son.
Lore & Background
Varian Wrynn's life is marked by a significant period of unexplained absence. During this time, his young son Anduin was crowned king but governed under the regency of Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, while Lady Katrana Prestor (the black dragon Onyxia) manipulated the government. The circumstances of Varian's disappearance and return were expanded upon in the Warcraft comic series, where it is revealed that two magically separated versions of him existed. Anduin recognized that the compliant version returned to Stormwind was not his true father and alerted Bolvar. This led to Onyxia abducting Anduin, forcing both versions of Varian to suspend their conflict and cooperate to rescue him. After the confrontation with Onyxia, the two versions were reunited, and Varian resumed the throne.
Reader's Guide
Varian Wrynn is depicted primarily through his contrast with his son, Anduin. While Anduin embraces the Holy Light and diplomacy, Varian embodies a warrior identity and militarism. Designers noted that their conflict was central to Anduin's development into an independent character. In a 2017 interview regarding World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, designers Alex Afrasiabi and Shani Edwards clarified that while they gave Anduin more active battlefield roles, he remained a priest to understand both Light and Shadow, distinguishing him from his father. Varian's death in Legion serves as the pivotal turning point where Anduin transitions from prince to king, inheriting leadership of the Alliance.
