Gul'dan
The treacherous warlock who forged the Shadow Council and corrupted the Horde.
Gul'dan is a fictional orc warlock and one of the franchise's recurring antagonists in Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft media. Introduced in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, he is depicted as a power-hungry sorcerer whose actions corrupt the orcs, create the Shadow Council, and set the Horde on its path of conquest. Originally portrayed as a former shaman from Draenor who rejected spiritual restraint for fel magic, his alliance with Kil'jaeden led to widespread demonic corruption. He appears in various timelines, including an alternate version in World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor and the main timeline during World of Warcraft: Legion. Beyond games, he was adapted as the main antagonist in the 2016 live-action film Warcraft, portrayed by Daniel Wu through motion capture.

Lore & Background
Gul'dan's story begins on Draenor where he was a former shaman who abandoned spiritual restraint to embrace fel magic. Serving Kil'jaeden, he manipulated orc clans through the Shadow Council, orchestrating their corruption and the creation of the first death knights for Orgrim Doomhammer during the Second War. His betrayal weakened the Horde as he abandoned them to search for the Tomb of Sargeras, where he was killed, leaving behind his Skull as a powerful demonic artifact.
In Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Illidan Stormrage consumed the Skull's power, transforming into a demon. An alternate timeline version appeared in World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor after Garrosh Hellscream prevented the blood pact with Mannoroth. Imprisoned initially, this Gul'dan later resumed service to the Burning Legion, taking control of the Iron Horde remnants and summoning Archimonde at Hellfire Citadel before crossing into Azeroth.
Reader's Guide
Gul'dan serves as a central figure in Warcraft lore, particularly regarding the founding and corruption of the Horde. Matthew Rossi of Engadget described the Shadow Council and the public military structure as his two central creations, allowing him to direct occult power while hiding behind puppet leadership like Blackhand. This dynamic fostered a "victory at any cost" mentality within the Horde. William Sims Bainbridge noted how Gul'dan contrasts Orc shamanism with warlock magic, leading former shamans to renounce their roles for an elite warlock group. In gameplay, he appears as the default Warlock hero in Hearthstone and as a playable spellcasting assassin in Heroes of the Storm, designed around fel magic, life-draining abilities, and resource management via Life Tap. PC Gamer described his adaptation there as dealing sustained damage rather than relying on single burst attacks.
