Lore & Background

Malfurion Stormrage was born before the War of the Ancients, a conflict that erupted over 10,000 years prior to the Third War. During this era, he worked alongside his brother Illidan and Tyrande Whisperwind against the Burning Legion. When Illidan made a pact with the Legion to secure Sargeras' entrance into Azeroth, Malfurion's efforts disrupted the plot, leading him to assist in the demons' defeat. In the aftermath of these events, after Illidan recreated the destroyed Well of Eternity, Malfurion imprisoned his brother for thousands of years.

During the Third War, Tyrande released Illidan from this millennia-long imprisonment, hoping he would redeem himself by battling a returned Burning Legion. Although Illidan fought to defend his people initially, he soon slipped into darkness after absorbing the energies of the demonic Skull of Gul'dan. Malfurion banished him for this act, marking the twice-condemned status of his brother.

Reader's Guide

He is the twin brother of Illidan, a Night Elf who opposed the Burning Legion's first invasion over 10,000 years ago. His defining historical moments include disrupting the Legion's plot during the War of the Ancients and imprisoning his brother for thousands of years after Illidan recreated the Well of Eternity. During the Third War, he faced a resurgent threat when Tyrande released Illidan from imprisonment. Malfurion was forced to banish his brother once more after Illidan consumed the energies of the Skull of Gul'dan and turned into a demon. While Illidan hid on Outland as its self-proclaimed Lord, Malfurion remained part of the forces opposing him. His legacy is one of containment and defense against demonic corruption, specifically regarding his twin brother's descent into darkness.
