Tinariwen is a collective of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara region of southern Algeria and northern Mali, in the region of Azawad. Considered pioneers of desert blues, the group's guitar-driven style combines traditional Tuareg and African music with Western rock music. The collective first convened in the late 1970s and released their first official studio album in 2001, beginning international touring in the early 2000s.

Lore & Background

Tinariwen was founded by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, who at age four witnessed the execution of his father, a Tuareg rebel, during a 1963 uprising in Mali. After seeing a western film, Ag Alhabib built his own guitar from an oil can, a stick, and a bicycle brake wire. He later lived in Algerian refugee camps and was taught Tergui music by an Algerian man. In 1979, he acquired his first real acoustic guitar and formed a band with Alhassane Ag Touhami and others, initially called Kel Tinariwen, meaning 'The People of the Deserts' or 'The Desert Boys'.

In 1980, Libyan ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi invited young Tuareg men for military training; Ag Alhabib and his bandmates received nine months of training. During this time, they met other Tuareg musicians and formed a loosely-organized collective, recording songs on homemade cassettes traded widely across the Sahara. In 1989, the collective moved to Mali, and after the 1990 Tuareg revolt and the 1991 Tamanrasset Accords, they devoted themselves to music full-time. Their first official studio album, The Radio Tisdas Sessions, was released in 2001.

Reader's Guide

Tinariwen's significance lies in their role as pioneers of desert blues, blending traditional Tuareg music with Western rock to create a distinctive sound that became a grassroots voice of rebellion. Their music emerged from the Tuareg struggle, with members having participated in armed uprisings and military training under Gaddafi. The group gained international recognition after 2001 with The Radio Tisdas Sessions, and their 2012 album Tassili won a Grammy for Best World Music Album.

Their influence extended to major artists like Carlos Santana, Robert Plant, and Bono, and they were described by NPR as 'music's true rebels' and by Slate as 'rock 'n' roll rebels whose rebellion, for once, wasn't just metaphorical'. Despite facing threats from militant Islamist groups like Ansar Dine, which denounced their music and abducted a member in 2013, Tinariwen continued to record and tour, adapting to political crises and maintaining a multi-generational evolution. Their legacy includes representing Algeria at the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony and headlining the Festival au Désert, which they helped inaugurate.
