Lore & Background

Víctor Jara was born on 28 September 1932 to tenant farmers near Chillán Viejo. His mother, Amanda Martínez, a mestiza with Mapuche ancestry, taught herself guitar and piano and performed folk songs. After his mother died when Jara was 15, he studied accounting, then entered a seminary but became disillusioned and left. He spent several years in the Chilean Army before pursuing folk music and theatre.

In 1957, Jara met Violeta Parra and began singing with the group Cuncumén, working as a guitarist and vocalist until 1963. He released his self-titled first album in 1966 and later albums including collaborative works with Quilapayún. His songs spread outside Chile and were performed by American folk artists. He composed 'Venceremos,' the theme song of Salvador Allende's Popular Unity movement.

Jara was arrested by the Chilean military after the 11 September 1973 coup. He was tortured during interrogations and shot dead, his body with a disputed number of bullet wounds thrown out on a street in Santiago. In June 2016, a Florida jury found former Chilean Army officer Pedro Barrientos liable for Jara's murder. In July 2018, eight retired Chilean military officers were sentenced to 15 years and a day in prison for the murder, but the conviction was later overturned on appeal and the case sent for retrial.

Reader's Guide

Víctor Jara's significance lies in his dual role as a transformative artist and a martyr of state repression. As a central figure in the Nueva canción chilena movement, he helped reshape Chilean popular music during the administration of Salvador Allende, using folk traditions to address themes of love, peace, and social justice. His murder by the Pinochet regime, with extreme brutality, turned him into a potent symbol of the struggle for human rights and justice for those killed under the dictatorship.

The contrast between his songs' messages and his violent death amplified his legacy. Legal proceedings decades later—including a U.S. jury finding Pedro Barrientos liable in 2016 and the 2018 sentencing of eight retired officers—underscore the ongoing pursuit of accountability. Jara's work as a cultural ambassador for Allende's government and his admiration for Che Guevara made him a target, but his music and story continue to resonate as a testament to artistic courage and the cost of political repression.
