Ukkonika's interest in winemaking began in infancy, watching her father, the late Ludovic Kasibante, a wine trader and first licensed distiller of local waragi, run a large bar in Rukungiri. She started making wine on a small scale in 2000, inspired by her deceased son Godwin Ukkonika, who initiated the wine-making concept in the family. Initially she bought wine from the village and sold it in Kampala. To understand business dynamics, she enrolled for a Bachelor's degree in business administration at Makerere University business school alongside her son, majoring in management while he studied accounting. She later took winemaking courses in 2013 and attained all her business degrees after age 31, having given birth to six children in seven years.

Before venturing into wine, Ukkonika worked for the Ministry of Finance for 37 years. After her son's death, she decided to let his dream live on. She began producing wine in her garage at home, then rented a place in Muyenga where she stored wine in 200-liter drums, later moving to Wandegeya for main offices, and eventually setting up a factory in Kira. She currently employs 20 people in addition to her children: her firstborn, who studied food technology and earned a master's degree in winemaking, serves as company consultant; her son is the accountant; and another child is the company driver and mechanic.
