Background

A 3-0 win in Atlanta on September 16 clinched the division for the second time in three years, and a 4-0 win over the Miami Marlins on September 26 secured the league's best record. On September 28, the last day of the regular season, Jordan Zimmermann threw the first no-hitter in Nationals history, a 1-0 win over the Marlins at Nationals Park; it was the franchise's fifth no-hitter and its first since Dennis Martinez's perfect game for Montreal in 1991. In the Division Series the Nationals lost to the San Francisco Giants, the eventual World Series champions, three games to one.
