Background
It was the franchise's first wild card game. Max Scherzer gave up a two-run homer to Yasmani Grandal in the first and a solo homer to Eric Thames in the second, and Trea Turner's home run in the third was Washington's only run until the eighth. Stephen Strasburg made the first relief appearance of his career and threw three scoreless innings. In the eighth, against Brewers closer Josh Hader, Michael A. Taylor was hit by a pitch, Ryan Zimmerman singled, Anthony Rendon walked to load the bases, and Juan Soto's single to right was misplayed by Trent Grisham, letting all three runners score. Daniel Hudson pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. It was the Nationals' ninth win in a row.
