Background
Over the winter the club added Vinny Castilla, Jose Guillen, Cristian Guzman and Esteban Loaiza. The Nationals won their first regular-season home game on April 14, 2005 at RFK Stadium, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 with Livan Hernandez the winning pitcher, the first major league game in Washington since 1971; President George W. Bush threw the ceremonial first pitch. Screech, the bald-eagle mascot designed by a nine-year-old D.C. student, was 'hatched' three days later at a Kids Opening Day promotion at RFK.
