Background
On September 3 the Nationals won their 82nd game, the first winning season since the move to Washington. A 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 20 clinched the franchise's first postseason berth since 1981 and the first for a Washington team since the Senators' 1933 pennant. The division was clinched on October 1, when the Atlanta Braves lost to Pittsburgh, and a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on October 3 closed the season with baseball's best record. The Nationals played 20 extra-inning games, more than any other team. In the Division Series they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals three games to two.
