Bad End Theater

A visual novel exploring bad endings from multiple perspectives.

Bad End Theater

Bad End Theater (stylized in all caps) is a 2021 visual novel video game created and published by indie developer NomnomNami. Set in a theater of the same name, the player guides four characters through various bad endings, each seen from the perspective of the character they control. The game launched for Windows on 26 October 2021 via Steam, with a console release following on 10 July 2025 through Serenity Forge. It has earned generally positive reviews, with critics highlighting its characters, gameplay, and narrative.

In the gameplay, the player picks one of four characters—the Hero, the Maiden, the Underling, or the Overlord—and assigns personality traits to the other three. These traits dictate how those characters behave while the player controls their chosen protagonist. The game contains 41 bad endings, each from a different character’s viewpoint, unlocked through the player’s decisions. Every ending serves as a clue for other storylines, and unlocked paths appear in a decision tree. The story is told in the second person.

The plot unfolds in a world of humans and demons, with a human village near a demon castle. In most paths, the human Maiden ends up in the castle, prompting the human Hero to attempt a rescue. Along the way, the Maiden and Hero may encounter the demon Underling. The demon Overlord, ruler of the demons, bonds with the Maiden during her captivity. The player’s choices shape the details and final outcome of each short story. As more storylines are discovered, mysterious letters appear, hinting at the theater’s playwright.

After all 41 bad endings are found—including a climactic “true” bad ending where the main cast dies together—a new path outside the theater’s story unlocks. The player and characters confront the masked playwright, Tragedy. A battle reveals that the player is Comedy, who had been searching for her lost lover Tragedy. Long before the theater’s story, Comedy and Tragedy were separated by their families’ disapproval. Tragedy later opened the Bad End Theater, watching many patrons come but none complete every story. Only Comedy explores it all and fights for a good ending for the characters. The in-story relationship between the Overlord and the Maiden is thus a metaphor for Comedy and Tragedy’s own. The game ends with their reunion—the good ending.

Lore & Background

Bad End Theater is a visual novel where the player selects one of four characters—the Hero, the Maiden, the Underling, or the Overlord—and assigns personality traits to the other three. These traits determine the choices the characters make as the player controls their chosen character. The game contains 41 bad endings from different perspectives, each functioning as a clue to progress in other paths, viewable in a decision tree. The story is narrated in the second person.

The plot involves a world of humans and demons, with a human village near a demons' castle. On most paths, the human Maiden ends up in the castle, the human Hero goes to rescue her, and they may interact with the demon Underling. The demon Overlord bonds with the Maiden in captivity. The player's choices determine the ending. Once all 41 bad endings are discovered, a climactic true bad ending featuring the main cast dying together unlocks a new path outside the theater's story. The player and characters confront the masked playwright, Tragedy. It is revealed the player is Comedy, who had been looking for her lost lover Tragedy. Long before, Comedy and Tragedy had been separated due to family disapproval. Tragedy opened the Bad End Theater, and only Comedy explores every story and fights for a good ending. The game ends with their reunion.

Each character has a pastel color, musical themes, and role: Hero (orange, archetypical hero), Maiden (purple, expected damsel in distress), Underling (cyan, untrustworthy servant), Overlord (pink, ruler of demons). The game has a retro chiptune soundtrack and expressive pixel art, contrasting with dark storylines. Themes include prejudice, loyalty, free will, morality, fate, and the idea that truth depends on perspective.

Reader's Guide

Bad End Theater is significant as the first commercial game by indie developer NomnomNami, who had made visual novels for years prior. The game's mechanic—where the player's choices as one character influence how the story unfolds for others—was inspired by Disgaea Infinite, and NomnomNami aimed to motivate players to explore all paths. The cute visual style was chosen to evoke emotions of tragic death without gruesome details, using stylized drawings. Originally intended as a game about empathy, it evolved to include themes like love. The cast was designed in May 2015, with color palettes decided in 2017; the Underling and Overlord were simplified, and the Hero went through many iterations. The game uses the Ren'Py engine, and NomnomNami designed character trait toggles and a timeline to balance providing answers with allowing player exploration. Reviewers have praised the characters, gameplay, and story, with TheGamer's Vanessa Esguerra calling it one of the best non-anime style visual novels. Its legacy lies in its innovative narrative structure and emotional depth within a compact, replayable format.
