Lore & Background

The series is set in Shiromitsugawa City, a college town where an earthquake shatters a sacred artifact at the Hakuda Tsukumo Shrine, connecting the protagonist Kakeru Niimi's world to an alternate world. Artifacts that awaken superhuman abilities appear in young people, and one Artifact User becomes a serial killer. Kakeru is approached by classmate Miyako Kujo to track down the killer, becoming embroiled in chaos among Artifact Users.

The first four episodes each focus on a different heroine: Miyako Kujo, Sora Niimi, Haruka Kosaka, and Noa Yuki. The story branches from one episode to the next, with the fourth episode strongly recommended to be played after the previous three. The final episode, 9-nine - Shinsho, ties up loose ends with after-story scenes and a new scenario.

An English version was released by Sekai Project from February 2019 to March 2021. A manga adaptation with art by Izumi Kawachi began serialization on Futabasha's Gaugau Monster website in October 2021.

Kakeru Niimi lives there on his own, away from his family, enjoying a peaceful and ordinary student existence. That tranquility shatters when a major earthquake strikes and destroys the sacred artifact housed at the Hakuda Tsukumo Shrine, rupturing the boundary between their world and an alternate one. In the aftermath, mysterious Artifacts begin surfacing among the town's young men and women, awakening superhuman abilities in their bearers. One of these Artifact Users turns into a serial killer, petrifying victims across the town. Kakeru is pulled into the investigation when his classmate Miyako Kujo recruits him to track down the culprit. As the group digs deeper, they encounter Rig Veda, an organization of Artifact Users who seem determined to oppose their efforts to uncover the truth. The overarching mystery ultimately leads to the mastermind behind the incidents and the hidden secrets embedded in the Artifacts that crossed into their world.

Cross-Media Adaptations & Global Reach

Since its initial Windows release spanning April 2017 to April 2020, with the concluding Shinsho episode arriving in April 2021, 9-Nine has grown far beyond its visual novel roots. Sekai Project handled the English localization of the visual novels, releasing them between February 2019 and March 2021 to bring the series to international audiences. In June 2022, the games received ports for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, broadening accessibility further. An all-aged extra episode was also released in April 2021. A manga adaptation illustrated by Izumi Kawachi began serialization on Futabasha's Gaugau Monster website in October 2021, and its chapters had been collected into two tankōbon volumes by July 2025. The anime television series 9-Nine: Ruler's Crown, produced by PRA under director Koichi Ohata, aired from July 5 to September 27, 2025, on Tokyo MX and BS NTV, with the original voice cast reprising their roles. Looking ahead, a spin-off visual novel titled As:9-Nine: Arteisia is scheduled for release in June 2026.

Character Ensemble & Voice Performances

The 9-Nine ensemble is anchored by Kakeru Niimi, voiced by Atsushi Abe, and the four heroines whose individual stories form the backbone of each episode.
