Lore & Background

The story follows Yū Kusaka, a student who lost his will to live after the death of a childhood friend. His depression is interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious girl named Eim Yoake, and he becomes embroiled in a battle against parasitic life forms called Ayakashi, which grant superpowers at the cost of the host's physical and mental health. Yū hosts the strongest Ayakashi, Ryuu, a dragon-like being. The plot involves a childhood promise Yū made to protect Hime Yakushiji and the deceased Izumi Makihara, whose consciousness was transferred to Eim after Eim killed her two years prior.

Reader's Guide

Ayakashi is significant as a mid-2000s eroge visual novel that spawned a sequel and an anime adaptation, reflecting the cross-media trends of the era. Its narrative explores themes of sacrifice, memory, and coexistence between humans and parasitic beings. The game's characters, such as Yū, Eim, and the antagonist Kare, drive a story centered on the toll of using Ayakashi powers. The sequel, Ayakashi H, continues the story one month later, introducing new characters like Kikuri Shirakami. The bundle release, Ayakashi Pack, capitalized on the anime's popularity. The work remains a notable example of Crossnet's output and the visual novel medium's expansion into anime.
