Assassin's Creed Nexus VR

First VR entry in the Assassin's Creed series.

Assassin's Creed Nexus VR

Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, a virtual reality action-adventure title, was developed by Red Storm Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. It launched on November 16, 2023, for the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3 headsets. Played from a first-person viewpoint, the game puts players in the roles of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Connor, and Kassandra. This marks the first time the Assassin's Creed series has ventured into VR.

The story follows an unnamed hacker recruited by Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings. Their mission: infiltrate Abstergo's "Nexus Eye" project, led by Dominika Wilk. The project aims to combine code fragments from an Isu machine with the Animus, creating a computer that can predict and control human behavior. Dominika orders the hacker to relive memories of Ezio, Kassandra, and Connor to locate these fragments. Secretly, though, the hacker plants logic bombs within those memories to destroy them, blocking Abstergo from acquiring the fragments.

In 1506, Ezio pursues a member of the Cult of Hermes named Seraphina to retrieve his stolen belongings. After succeeding, he returns to Monteriggioni, where his sister Claudia oversees repairs from a siege six years earlier. Bandits, led by Seraphina, attack the town and steal Ezio's belongings. He chases her through underground tunnels, but she escapes to Venice. Following her trail, Ezio gets help from his friend Antonio de Magianis, who directs him to a merchant named Francesco Rizzo. Ezio humiliates Rizzo to draw him out and kills him, discovering Rizzo is a Templar. Later, Ezio reunites with Leonardo da Vinci; they deduce Seraphina belongs to the Cult of Hermes and seeks the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus. Ezio finds the temple where the Staff is kept and confronts Seraphina, who tries to use the artifact on him—but it's a fake. He kills her and reclaims his belongings.

In 405 BC, Kassandra goes to Delos to help the Spartan army by assassinating two Athenian commanders. She then meets her friend Odessa, who asks her to retrieve the bow of Odysseus, an ancestor of Odessa. Kassandra gets the bow, but Odessa lets her keep it. Six months later, Kassandra travels to Athens, now occupied by Sparta and ruled by the Thirty Tyrants. Their leader, Critias, orders her to eliminate a group of thieves, then asks her to assassinate his rival Theramenes for political gain.

Reader's Guide

Assassin's Creed Nexus VR represents a significant milestone as the franchise's first virtual reality title, developed primarily by Red Storm Entertainment with assistance from multiple Ubisoft studios. Announced in September 2020 at Facebook Connect, it was released exclusively for Meta Quest headsets in late 2023. The game received generally favorable reviews, with IGN rating it 7/10 and Wired praising its authenticity for fans. However, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot reported disappointing sales, leading the company to not increase its investment in VR. The game's narrative ties together three historical protagonists across different eras, offering a complete Assassin's Creed experience in VR. Its legacy is mixed: critically well-received but commercially underwhelming, highlighting the challenges of AAA VR game adoption.

The Narrative Framework and Three Heroic Arcs

Assassin's Creed Nexus VR wraps its three historical adventures inside a modern framing device. An unnamed hacker, hired by Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings, infiltrates Abstergo's "Nexus Eye" project, led by Dominika Wilk. Wilk's goal is to recover fragments of an Isu machine and fuse them with the Animus to build a computer capable of predicting and influencing human behavior. The hacker is told to relive the memories of Ezio, Kassandra, and Connor to locate those fragments, but is actually planting logic bombs to destroy the memories and foil Abstergo. Ezio's 1509 arc in Venice and Monteriggioni pits him against Seraphina, a Cult of Hermes operative seeking the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus. Kassandra's 405 BC storyline moves from Delos to Spartan-occupied Athens, where she rejects the Thirty Tyrants' leader Critias and leads a liberation effort. Connor's 1775-to-1777 arc spans Boston and Newport, Rhode Island, as he rescues Sons of Liberty, unmasks false Patriots, and hunts a Templar spymaster. After Dominika exposes the hacker, Rebecca and Shaun pull them to safety. The hacker detonates every logic bomb, destroying the Nexus Eye—yet Dominika still tracks them down, and an Abstergo team captures the hacker in a deliberately unresolved ending.

Development and the Road to Release

Red Storm Entertainment spearheaded development of Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, with support from Ubisoft Reflections and Ubisoft studios spread across Düsseldorf, Mumbai, Pune, Montreal, Belgrade, and Berlin—a notably distributed, multi-regional effort. The project first surfaced in September 2020 during Facebook's Connect digital event, where Red Storm's VP of Product Development, Elizabeth Loverso, teased a slate of AAA franchises arriving in virtual reality. Two of those projects, one untitled Assassin's Creed title and one untitled Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell game, were earmarked as exclusive to Oculus platforms. The Assassin's Creed project remained nameless for nearly three years. It was finally unveiled as Assassin's Creed Nexus VR at a Meta Quest Gaming Showcase in June 2023, alongside a late-2023 release window. The game ultimately launched on November 16, 2023, for Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3 headsets. As the first virtual reality entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise, it marked a significant platform expansion for a series previously defined by console and PC releases, positioning the long-running brand squarely within the emerging VR gaming market.

Critical Response and the VR Challenge

Assassin's Creed Nexus VR earned generally favorable reviews on Metacritic, though critics consistently highlighted the tension between a full AAA structure and the constraints of virtual reality. IGN scored the title 7 out of 10, praising it as an impressively complete Ubisoft production while noting that not every element translates smoothly into a headset. Matt Kamen at Wired offered a more effusive take, describing the game as brimming with passion and dedication—not merely to crafting a VR-deliverable experience, but to producing something that feels authentic and even essential for Assassin's Creed fans. The first-person perspective, natural for VR, allowed players to inhabit Ezio, Kassandra, and Connor directly, placing them at the center of assassination sequences and exploration across Venice, Athens, and colonial Boston. Reviewers seemed to appreciate the ambition of adapting a franchise known for open-world scale into a headset format, even as some acknowledged that certain set pieces lost impact in VR. The overall reception painted a picture of a well-crafted, heartfelt entry that respected its source material while navigating the unique technical and design challenges of the medium.

Commercial Reality and What It Means for VR

Despite positive critical reception, Assassin's Creed Nexus VR faced a sobering commercial reality. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot publicly acknowledged that the game's sales were disappointing, a candid admission carrying significant implications for the publisher's future strategy in virtual reality. The direct consequence was that Ubisoft chose not to increase its investment in VR development, signaling a cautious retreat from the platform after this high-profile attempt. The title's position as the first virtual reality game in the Assassin's Creed series made its commercial performance a bellwether for whether a major AAA franchise could find a viable audience in headsets. Released exclusively for Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3 on November 16, 2023, the game represented a substantial bet by both Ubisoft and Red Storm Entertainment. The disappointing sales figure, as relayed by Guillemot, suggests that the VR gaming market, while growing, may not yet support the scale of investment that a franchise of Assassin's Creed's stature demands. For the broader industry, the episode serves as a reminder that critical acclaim and commercial success do not always align, particularly in emerging platforms where audience size and purchasing behavior remain uncertain.
