Among Us 3D, originally called Among Us VR, is a social deduction game that came out in 2022. It was built by Schell Games, Innersloth, and Robot Teddy, and turns the flat 2D version of Among Us into a three-dimensional experience. At first, it was made for virtual reality headsets. Innersloth published it in November 2022 for the Meta Quest 2 and for Windows computers using SteamVR-compatible headsets. A version for the PlayStation 5, played through the PlayStation VR2, arrived on December 5, 2023. Later, on May 6, 2025, a version that doesn't need VR gear was released.

The game works like the original: players split into two teams, Crewmates and Impostors. Crewmates win by finishing all their tasks on the map or by calling meetings to vote out the Impostors. Impostors look exactly like Crewmates, so they blend in while trying to kill everyone without being caught. The match ends when one team's goal is met—either all Crewmates are dead or all tasks are done.

Critics generally liked the game. By January 24, 2023, it had sold more than one million copies.

**Gameplay**

In Among Us 3D, up to ten players join a lobby. Crewmates have to complete various tasks to win. Impostors, who can see each other but look identical to Crewmates, try to kill everyone. They can sabotage parts of the ship or use vents to move around quickly. When a player finds a dead body, they can start a meeting. Everyone discusses who the Impostor might be and votes to eject someone. If a player is ejected or killed, they become a ghost—they can still move around but can't talk to living players, kill, or report bodies. Players can customize their characters with hats and other cosmetics. Communication happens through proximity chat, a quick chat feature, or high-fives. Unlike the original, this game uses a first-person view and adds new tasks, including one similar to Whac-A-Mole. It also introduces a new map called The Skeld II.

**Development and release**

The first trailer for the game, then called Among Us VR, appeared at The Game Awards in 2021. An open beta was announced in August 2022. The game launched on November 10, 2022, for the Meta Quest 2 and Windows via Steam. The Windows version works with Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. People who pre-ordered on the Meta Quest Store got a Mini Crewmate hat.

Lore & Background

Among Us 3D originated as Among Us VR, announced at The Game Awards 2021. An open beta was announced in August 2022, and the game launched on November 10, 2022 for Meta Quest 2 and Windows via Steam, supporting multiple VR headsets. A PlayStation VR2 version was originally announced for a February 2023 release but was delayed, eventually releasing on December 5, 2023. On February 20, 2025, the rebranding to Among Us 3D and a non-VR PC port were announced; the non-VR version launched on May 6, 2025.

The gameplay involves two teams: Crewmates, who complete tasks to win, and Impostors, who kill Crewmates without detection. Impostors can sabotage ship systems and use vents. Meetings are called when a dead body is reported, allowing players to vote on ejecting a suspect.

Reader's Guide

Among Us 3D represents a significant expansion of the Among Us franchise into virtual reality and 3D environments, broadening its audience and demonstrating the adaptability of social deduction gameplay. The game received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising its polished design, proximity chat, and motion-control tasks, though some noted a lack of content and bland areas. Its sales exceeded one million copies by January 24, 2023, and it ranked highly on PSVR2 download charts in 2024. The rebranding to Among Us 3D and the release of a non-VR version in 2025 made the game accessible to players without VR hardware, ensuring its continued relevance. The game's legacy lies in successfully translating a popular 2D multiplayer experience into immersive 3D and VR formats, while maintaining the core social deduction mechanics that made the original a phenomenon.

Did You Know?

From Virtual Reality to Full 3D: A Multi-Studio Evolution

Among Us 3D began life under a different name. At The Game Awards 2021, the project was unveiled as Among Us VR, a virtual reality adaptation of the beloved 2D social deduction game. The development effort brought together three studios—Schell Games, Innersloth, and Robot Teddy—each contributing to what would become a first-person reimagining of the franchise. After an open beta was announced in August 2022, the game launched on November 10, 2022, for Meta Quest 2 and Windows PC through SteamVR-compatible headsets including Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. A PlayStation VR2 edition was initially slated for February 2023 but was pushed back, finally arriving on December 4, 2023. The project's identity shifted again in February 2025 when Schell Games and Innersloth announced the rebrand to Among Us 3D, dropping the VR requirement entirely. The non-VR PC version hit Steam on May 6, 2025. Along the way, the team confirmed a new, larger map called Polus Point and even shared that they carefully reworked kill animations to keep the tone from feeling too horror-like.

First-Person Deception: Redefining the Social Deduction Formula

Stepping into Among Us 3D means leaving the top-down view behind and inhabiting a fully three-dimensional ship from a first-person perspective. Lobbies accommodate up to ten players, and communication shifts from text-based quick chat to immersive proximity voice chat, letting you high-five teammates or whisper suspicions across the corridor. The core two-team structure remains: Crewmates race to finish scattered tasks while Impostors lurk in plain sight, looking identical to everyone else. Impostors gain access to sabotage mechanics and ventilation shafts for rapid traversal, adding a layer of environmental tension absent in the 2D original. When a body is discovered, any player can call a meeting, spark debate, and cast a vote to eject a suspect. Eliminated players persist as ghosts, unable to speak, kill, or report bodies, but still watching the living players scramble. The game introduces fresh task designs—including a Whac-A-Mole-style mini-game—and a brand-new map called The Skeld 2. Character customization through hats and cosmetics carries over, and the developers deliberately softened kill animations so the experience stays playful rather than frightening.

Critical Consensus: Praise for Polish, Cautions on Content

Reviewers broadly welcomed Among Us 3D as a meaningful evolution of its 2D predecessor, though opinions on depth varied. Metacritic aggregated the reception as 'generally favorable.' Giovanni Colantonio of Digital Trends called it a clear improvement, a view echoed by Inverse's Corey Plante, who nonetheless found certain areas of the ship somewhat bland. IGN's Henry Stockdale awarded an 8 out of 10, acknowledging a thin content library but crediting the polished execution for carrying the experience. UploadVR's Ian Hamilton was even more effusive, labeling the title 'top tier VR design' and praising its sound, lighting, and interaction work. Dave McQuilling highlighted the smooth online experience and accessible controls while flagging missing features and lingering bugs. TechRadar's Hamish Hector declared it essential for any VR headset owner, and Game Rant's Cameron Swan felt the gameplay 'absolutely nails what it set out to do.' Android Central's Michael L Hicks was particularly struck by the proximity chat and motion-based tasks, writing that The Skeld 'feels like a real ship crewed by real people.' Robert Zak enjoyed the first-person immersion but wryly complained about the inevitable shrieks of players who refuse to play by the rules.

Breaking a Million: Commercial Momentum and Player Engagement

Among Us 3D's commercial trajectory speaks to the enduring pull of the franchise. By January 24, 2023—just two months after its November 2022 launch—the game had already surpassed one million copies sold. Innersloth later revealed that the title had been played more than four million times, averaging roughly 44,000 matches per day, a figure that underscores how deeply the social deduction loop resonates with its audience. The PlayStation VR2 edition, despite its late-2023 release, carved out a strong niche: in 2024 it ranked second among the most downloaded PSVR2 titles in the United States and Canada, and fourth in Europe, holding a spot in the platform's Top 10 for the year. The game's presence across multiple headset ecosystems—Meta Quest 2, Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality on PC, plus PSVR2—gave it a broad hardware footprint from the start. Even small touches, like the Mini Crewmate hat bundled with Quest Store preorders and the April Fools' horse hat, helped maintain community buzz between major updates.
