Lore & Background

The game's story posits Russia quickly invading the eastern countries of Europe, with Iceland next on the list after NATO abandons the country to protect Western Europe. The ICEFOR is outnumbered but deploys a small number of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft to turn the tide. The game features an extensive virtual battleground over Iceland, one of the most advanced of its time, with a dynamic camera enabling real-time observation of the war. An in-game newspaper delivers news as the conflict unfolds.

Players can take over the destiny of six pilots, each assigned different missions based on abilities such as bombing, interception, and Wild Weasel. Several missions occur simultaneously, and the player can switch between pilots at any time, taking charge of critical tasks while AI handles others. As the war progresses, pilots can be injured, lost behind enemy lines after ejection, taken prisoner, or interrogated by the Russians.

Reader's Guide

Eurofighter Typhoon received 'average' reviews according to Metacritic. Kevin Rice of NextGen described it as having 'an incredible sense of speed combined with an intuitive interface' that makes for an addictive flight sim. The game is notable for its dynamic real-time battleground and the ability to manage multiple pilots simultaneously, a feature that allows players to switch between critical mission tasks. Its extended version, Operation Icebreaker, added an additional campaign. The game's development history includes Digital Image Design being bought by Rage Software while working on it as a successor to F-22 Total Air War.
