Commandos 2: Men of Courage

Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a real-time tactics game from Pyro Studios, published by Eidos Interactive, and launched on September 20, 2001. As the follow-up to Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (1998), it marks the second title in the Commandos series and was made available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. Players lead a squad of commandos and various allied units on covert missions set between 1941 and 1944, aiming to disrupt the war efforts of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The game builds on its predecessor with key upgrades: commandos can now pick up and use enemy weapons, move through indoor spaces, and three new characters join the roster, while the original six members gain fresh abilities and new gear. The PC version earned positive reviews, but the console ports were less well received. In 2005, Feral Interactive bundled it with Commandos 3: Destination Berlin (2003) in the Commandos Battle Pack. A remastered edition, with improved graphics and controls, came out in 2020 from Kalypso Media for Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Players act as an Allied officer directing a team of commandos, each possessing distinct skills, across twenty-one missions: two training stages, ten story missions, and nine bonus missions that are only accessible after each story mission is completed, if the player acquires a set of books marked "bonus" within each of them. Each mission has main and secondary objectives—such as securing an escape route or locating supplies—with briefings revealing some goals, while others emerge from completing tasks or following clues. Players start with a subset of commandos, sometimes gaining more by contacting or rescuing them in the field. The original six commandos return with enhanced abilities. The Green Beret can climb telephone poles, traverse cables, jump from windows, and carry small containers. The Sniper can use poles as sniping perches. The Spy can order soldiers and staff to move when disguised as an officer, and his syringe can daze, knock out, or kill depending on dosage. The Diver now throws knives and carries a grappling hook for scaling walls or setting tripwires. The Driver sets lethal and non-lethal traps. The Sapper uses a mine detector to find and disarm mines, and can plant mines against infantry and vehicles.
