Lore & Background
The story follows Kayron Jarvis, who inherits the DarkStar One, an advanced partly organic starship built by his late father Simon Jarvis using ancient technology. Kayron's father was killed by sabotage, and Kayron initially hunts the traitor Jack Forrester, but later discovers that his father's business partner Robert Altair was the true culprit. The plot involves drone attacks on research stations, blamed on the Thul race, but ultimately revealed to be orchestrated by the extra-galactic S'kaa, who seek galactic domination through manipulation and control. Kayron, with co-pilot Eona, destroys the S'kaa mothership's shield generator, forcing the S'kaa to escape through a portal, which is then closed.
Reader's Guide
The game received positive to mixed reviews, with a Metacritic score of 71/100. Graphics were often praised, while gameplay was criticized as overly simplistic and repetitive by some outlets, though others lauded its accessibility. It was frequently compared to other space sims such as Elite, Freelancer, and the X series. The game's open-ended activities after the main story—trading, escorting, mercenary work, and fending off pirates—extend its replayability. The Xbox 360 version, Darkstar One: Broken Alliance, featured 1080p and improved gameplay, while the Nintendo Switch Edition offered enhanced visuals. The ship's upgrade system, based on collecting 100 alien artifacts, changes its appearance and capabilities, including unlocking a zero-point drive for unlimited hyperspace travel.
