Asriel Dreemurr's Death

How the prince of the Underground died on the surface, setting Undertale's story in motion.

Before the events of Undertale, Asriel Dreemurr, son of Toriel and Asgore, took in the soul of his adoptive human sibling Chara after Chara's death, crossed the barrier and carried their body to the surface. Humans mistook him for Chara's murderer; Asriel refused to fight back and was killed. Enraged, Asgore resolved to collect the souls of humans who entered the Underground until he had enough to free monsterkind, and Toriel left him over that decision.
