In Undertale, monsters once lived alongside humans on the surface of the planet, but after an ancient war they were trapped in the Underground and forgotten. Gerson, an elderly shopkeeper in Waterfall, was once a hero known as the "Hammer of Justice" who fought in the war against humans.
