Worms Clan Wars

A turn-based tactics game with clans and Steam Workshop support.

Worms Clan Wars

Worms Clan Wars is a turn-based artillery tactics game from Team17, continuing the long-running Worms series. It first launched for Windows on August 15, 2013, and later arrived on Mac OS X and Linux. A console version, called Worms Battlegrounds, came out the following year.

The single-player campaign, like earlier Worms titles, consists of twenty-five missions spread across five themed environments: Prehistoric, Viking, Inca, Feudal Japan, and the Industrial Revolution. The story follows Tara Pinkle, voiced by Katherine Parkinson, who acts as both narrator and mission-giver. Alongside the campaign, there are ten Worm Ops missions that focus on time-attack challenges.

Gameplay sticks to the series’ formula, where teams of worms take turns using various weapons and items to wipe out opponents. It builds on Worms Revolution by keeping four distinct classes, each with new special abilities. This installment also marks the first in the series to support Steam Workshop. Online play was improved, letting players form clans and chat through WormNET, the game’s built-in lobby and chat system.

Reception was mixed to positive. It holds a Metacritic score of 73 out of 100, and as of August 2013, a GameRankings score of 72.50%.

Lore & Background

The single-player campaign features twenty-five missions across five environments: Prehistoric, Viking, Inca, Feudal Japan, and the Industrial Revolution. The story focuses on a character named Tara Pinkle, voiced by Katherine Parkinson, who serves as the narrator and provides missions for the team. In addition to the campaign, the game includes ten Worm Ops missions that feature time attack modes.

Gameplay follows earlier games in the series, where teams of worms take turns using a variety of weapons and items to eliminate opposing teams. Like Worms Revolution, it has four different classes, each improved with new special abilities. This is the first Worms game to add Steam Workshop support. Online gameplay is improved, allowing players to create clans and chat on WormNET, the game's own lobby and chat system.

Reader's Guide

Worms Clan Wars received mixed to positive reviews, holding a Metacritic score of 73/100 and a GameRankings score of 72.50% in August 2013. Its significance lies in building on the established Worms formula while introducing new features such as Steam Workshop support, which allowed community-created content, and enhanced online clan and chat systems via WormNET. The game's four classes with special abilities added tactical depth, and the console port Worms Battlegrounds extended its reach to a broader audience. The campaign's five themed environments and the inclusion of time attack missions provided variety, though the reception indicated it was a solid but not revolutionary entry in the long-running series.
