Age of Wonders III is a 4X turn-based strategy game from Dutch developer Triumph Studios, released on March 31, 2014, for Microsoft Windows via digital distribution and select retail outlets. A port for Linux and OS X arrived on April 14, 2015. As the fourth installment in the Age of Wonders series—following the 1999 original, 2002's *Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne*, and 2003's *Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic*—it proved both a critical and commercial hit, breathing new life into the franchise.
Set in a high-fantasy world, players assume the role of a leader who explores, expands, exploits, and exterminates their way to dominance. The game introduces a new graphics engine and an updated soundtrack, alongside a revamped gameplay system. A key addition is a role-playing-style leader class system, letting players choose from six classes—Sorcerer, Theocrat, Rogue, Archdruid, Dreadnought, and Warlord—each with unique units and strategic approaches. Six playable races (humans, draconians, high elves, dwarves, orcs, and goblins) offer distinct perks and appearances, with leaders and heroes gaining experience, levels, equipment, and powers. Alignment shifts between good and evil based on player actions and absorbed cultures, rather than race as in earlier games.
Cities provide resources, infrastructure, unit recruitment, spell casting, and research, requiring gold, mana, and research points. Independent cities and units populate the map, defending their domains; players can conquer them or absorb them through diplomacy, paying tribute that affects alignment. Retaining a city's native population allows recruitment of other races, while migrating populations is considered an evil act. Terrain affects city prosperity—dwarves thrive in mountains, for instance—and can be altered via migration or terraforming spells. Quests from independent forces offer rewards like gold or equipment, sometimes with a choice upon completion.
The game includes a story-driven campaign playable from two sides: the human-centric Commonwealth Empire and the High Elf Court. It also features single-player scenarios, online and local multiplayer, a level editor, and random map generation. A spin-off, *Age of Wonders: Planetfall*, followed in 2019, and a direct sequel, *Age of Wonders 4*, released in 2023 to further acclaim.

Lore & Background
Age of Wonders III is set in a high fantasy fictional setting where players take the role of a leader to explore the world, interacting with other races and kingdoms through diplomacy and warfare while expanding and managing their empire. The game features six available races at release: humans, draconians, high elves, dwarves, orcs, and goblins, each with unique perks and abilities. A new role-playing style leader class system allows players to choose from six classes—Sorcerer, Theocrat, Rogue, Archdruid, Dreadnought, and Warlord—each with unique units and strategic approaches. Leaders and hero units can gain experience, level up, and acquire new equipment and powers. Player alignment between good and evil is developed based on actions and absorbed cultures rather than race as in previous games.
The game offers a story-driven campaign playable from two sides: the human-centric Commonwealth Empire and the Court of the High Elves. The plot recounts that before the events of the first game, the elven court was decimated by humans, an invasive race new to the Blessed Continent. The elves split into two factions: Meandor, son of the slain king Inioch, led the dark elves and the Cult of Storms, while Inioch's daughter Julia led the wood elves and the Keepers.
Reader's Guide
Age of Wonders III marked a revitalization of the series after a long hiatus, achieving both critical and commercial success. It introduced a fully 3D graphics engine and an updated soundtrack, moving from the isometric view of earlier titles. The game's new leader class system and interchangeable race appearances added depth to empire management and combat strategy. Combat takes place on hexagon grid-based 3D battlefields, with units represented by multiple soldiers or single strong characters, using action points for movement, attacks, and retaliation. Spells usable in battle are limited by mana, and battlefield environment features such as walls, foliage, and flanking maneuvers affect tactics. The game supports online and local multiplayer, a level editor, random map generation, and single-player scenarios. A spin-off, Age of Wonders: Planetfall, was released in 2019, and a direct sequel, Age of Wonders 4, followed in 2023 to further commercial and critical success.

How does Age of Wonders III differ from other 4X titles?
The game layers an RPG progression system on top of the standard explore-expand-exploit-exploit loop, letting you pick a leader class, cast spells, and level up your hero throughout a campaign. Tactical battles run in real time with a pause button, giving a more action-oriented feel than strictly turn-based combat.
Who made Age of Wonders III and when did it come out?
Dutch studio Triumph Studios handled both development and publishing. The Windows version shipped on March 31, 2014, and a port for Linux and OS X followed on April 14, 2015.
Where does Age of Wonders III sit in the franchise timeline?
It is the fourth mainline entry, coming after the 1999 original, Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne (2002), and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (2003). Its strong reception effectively re-energized a series that had been quiet for more than a decade.
What leader classes are available in Age of Wonders III?
You can choose from several fantasy archetypes—mage, warrior, priest, and others—each offering a distinct spell kit and tactical role. As your leader gains experience across the campaign, they unlock new abilities that influence both the strategic map and battlefield encounters.
