Sam Merlotte
Shapeshifter owner of Merlotte's Bar and Grill in Bon Temps.
Sam Merlotte comes from Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries, where he first appears in Dead Until Dark, and in HBO's True Blood he is played by Sam Trammell. When the story opens he runs Merlotte's Bar and Grill in Bon Temps, Louisiana, and employs Sookie Stackhouse. Sam is not a vampire but a shapeshifter: he can take the form of any animal he has seen. At first the existence of shifters is kept hidden from the public.
