The war began on the ravaged planet Cybertron, where Optimus Prime led the Autobots and Megatron commanded the Decepticons. Both factions sought the AllSpark; the Autobots aimed to rebuild their home, while the Decepticons intended universal conquest. In 1897, Captain Archibald Witwicky stumbled upon the frozen Megatron in the Arctic Circle, accidentally activating his navigational system and imprinting the AllSpark's location onto his glasses. Decades later, a secret U.S. government organization known as Sector 7 located the artifact in the Colorado River. To conceal its energy emissions, they built the Hoover Dam around the frozen Megatron and the AllSpark, reverse-engineering Megatron to advance human technology. In the present day, Decepticons including Blackout, Scorponok, Frenzy, Barricade, and Starscream landed on Earth, disguising themselves as vehicles and electronics to locate their leader and the artifact.

In Their Own Story

In modern times, Decepticon forces attacked a U.S. SOCCENT military base in Qatar. Blackout and Scorponok attempted to hack into the U.S. military network to find Megatron and the AllSpark but were thwarted when staff severed cable connections. Captain William Lennox, Sergeant Robert Epps, and survivors escaped the destruction while being pursued by Scorponok until air strikes repelled him. Meanwhile, Frenzy infiltrated Air Force One, hacking the network to locate Archibald's glasses, which were owned by his descendant, teenager Sam Witwicky. This led Frenzy and Barricade to track Sam in Los Angeles. Bumblebee, an Autobot scout disguised as a 1976 Chevrolet Camaro (later a 2007 model), was purchased by Sam for his first car. After Bumblebee rescued Sam and Mikaela Banes from Barricade, they rendezvoused with arriving Autobots Optimus Prime, Jazz, Ironhide, and Ratchet. Government agents from Sector 7 arrived to arrest the group and capture Bumblebee. Frenzy secretly accompanied them to the Hoover Dam, alerting other Decepticons upon finding the AllSpark and releasing Megatron.
